I've heard claims that Ronald McRaygun destroyed "The Evil Empire" by escalating Cold War military spending until the USSR's economy collapsed.
Well, if you believe that extensive and protracted military spending brought down the Red Menace, you might start worrying about US.
I personally don't credit Reagan with anything but contributing to the mess we're in, and there are billions of reasons I'm against military spending, wasting cash being only one.
